An image of a former American military analyst is falsely being shared to claim that the Italian President was arrested.A photo claiming that Italian President Sergio Mattarella was arrested for meddling in the US 2020 Presidential election has gone viral.

However, the man in the viral photo is Daniel Ellsberg, a former American military analyst. The Associated Press first published the original image on March 20, 2011. The article is about the arrest of more than 100 anti-war protesters, including Ellsberg, who took part in a rally near Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Ellsberg had leaked Pentagon's papers in 1971 that revealed the secret history of the Vietnam War.

Furthermore, the Italian President's official website shows that President Sergio Mattarella was accompanied by the President of the Lazio Region Nicola Zingaretthe during his visit to the new anti-COVID vaccination center on March 6 2021. There is no news that the President was arrested. If the President was actually arrested, this news would have been widely covered by media in the US and in other parts of the world.
