African Americans' unemployment rate in August 2019 is 5.5%, the lowest figure recorded since the U.S. Labor Department started collecting statistics. The Bureau of Labor Statistics started to collect data on unemployment and employment from the 1970s. According to the statistics available on the official website of the U.S. Labor Department, during August 2019, the unemployment rate hit the lowest in the Trump administration.

Moreover, the statistics also reveal that black unemployment dropped from a recession high of 16.8% in March 2010 to 7.8% in January 2017. Black Americans' unemployment reached 16.8% in May 2020, from 16.7% in April 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Therefore there is a consistent decline in the black unemployment rate from 2017.
