BuzzFeed announced that it would be closing the UK and Australian news operations for economic and strategic reasons.The Guardian, BBC News and Press Gazette reported that BuzzFeed had announced on May 13, 2020, that it would end the local and political news coverage in the UK and Australia due to shrinkage of advertising revenue. However, staff covering celebrities, investigations, and global news important to the U.S. audiences will be retained. Ten staff members from the UK News team have been furloughed.

Buzzfeed said that it would invest heavily in its news business and it would spend about $10 million more than it makes from its operation this year and about $6 million more next year.
