In January 2020, the Chinese Qingdao Taekwang shoe company in Xinjiang had employed 600 minority workers.A report released by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the Chinese government, facilitated mass transfer of Uyghur and other ethnic minority citizens from Xinjiang to factories across the country. Under conditions that strongly suggest forced labor, Uyghurs are working in factories that are in the supply chains of at least 83 well-known global brands in the technology, including the Chinese Qingdao Taekwang shoe company, which supplies shoes to Nike.

The report further states that in January 2020, around 600 ethnic minority workers from Xinjiang were employed at Qingdao Taekwang Shoes Co. Ltd. The Uyghur community is considered a backward community disturbed by religious extremism as per the Chinese government. The employees belong to the remote parts of Hotan and Kashgar in southern Xinjiang and the chief executive of the parent company. Taekwang said that among the 7,100 workers working in the plant, 600 were from the belong to the underdeveloped community Uyghur. The report also estimates that more than 80,000 Uyghurs were transferred out of Xinjiang to work in factories across China between 2017 and 2019.
