An old image of Iraq's Al Quba Hussainia mosque is falsely attributed as a mosque demolished by the Taliban in Pakistan.

An old image of Iraq's Al Quba Hussainia mosque is falsely attributed as a mosque demolished by the Taliban in Pakistan. An image claiming that the Taliban bombed a mosque in Pakistan went viral on social media soon after the militant group took over Afghanistan on August 15, 2021. The claim is false as the burning mosque featured in the image is from Mosul in Iraq from 2014.

A reverse image search drove us to several international media reports that detailed the original incident. On July 7, 2014, The Times also carried the same image, stating that ISIS demolished nearly a dozen Shia shrines and mosques in western Iraq because they were judged to be idolatrous.

A New Zealand-based media outlet, Stuff, published the image on September 23, 2014, stating that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) had blown up the Al-Qubba Husseiniya mosque in Mosul, Iraq, and credited the image to the Associated Press (AP).

Therefore, we conclude that the viral image shared on social media is not associated with Pakistan.
