During a Commerce Committee hearing, Marsha Blackburn asked Sundar Pichai about a Google engineer's employment status.Blake Lemoine, a senior software engineer at Google, described Marsha Blackburn, the Tennessee Republican Senate candidate, as a violent thug in an internal company email in 2018. The email focussed on Blackburn's Fox News op-ed, which urged Silicon Valley companies to address bias against conservatives. The employee also called Blackburn a terrorist with whom Google should not negotiate, according to Breitbart News.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai appeared before federal lawmakers to respond to questions about Section 230 of the 1996 Communications Decency Act on October 7, 2020. During the hearing, which was held virtually held because of the pandemic, Blackburn asked Pichai about Lemoine's employment status. Pichai answered by revealing that he did not know whether or not Lemoine still worked at the company. Blackburn stated that Lemoine had said very unkind things about her in the past.
