India becomes the second country after the U.S. to cross the 200 million mark in cumulative vaccine coverage.

India is now the second country after the U.S. to administer 200 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

India is now the second country after the U.S. to administer 200 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccination drive began in India in January 2021 and expanded to include everyone above 18 years under the Phase 3 vaccination programme. Two locally manufactured vaccines are used against COVID-19 in its immunization drive, including Serum Institute of India’s Covishield and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin. Russia's Sputnik is also approved for use in the country.

The country reached the milestone of administering 200 million doses of vaccine on May 26, 2021. Only United States has reached the landmark in fewer days. It took 130 days for India to cross 200 million doses, whereas it took 124 days in the U.S.

However, China has administered the highest number of jabs globally, followed by the U.S. and India. But in terms of the total population, India is lagging as only around 3 percent have received the full dose.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. For reliable advice on COVID-19 including symptoms, prevention and available treatment, please refer to the World Health Organisation or your national healthcare authority.
