The Indian Border Security Force's jurisdiction in three border states has been increased to curb cross-border crimes.

The decision to increase jurisdiction is made to bring uniformity across states and enhance the powers of the Border Security forces.

The decision to increase jurisdiction is made to bring uniformity across states and enhance the powers of the Border Security forces. The Union Home Ministry has amended the Border Security Force Act through a gazette notification on October 11, 2021. It authorizes the BSF to undertake search, seizure, and arrests within a 50 km belt instead of the existing 15 km along the international borders in Punjab, West Bengal, and Assam. In Gujarat, the belt has been reduced from 80 kms to 50 km, while in Rajasthan, it is kept unchanged.

According to sources, the move will enable the forces to curb trans-border crimes effectively and secure the border in the wake of increased cross-border infiltration by militants. It allows the BSF to act against any offenses punishable under any Central Act. The amendment will also improve the operational effectiveness as they have the power to curb all forms of illegal activity, which includes the search and seizure of narcotics and prohibited items.
