A UN body has recognized the Indian city of Hyderabad as the 'International Tree City of the world.'

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation has listed Hyderbad as the 'Tree city of the world.'

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation has listed Hyderbad as the 'Tree city of the world.'In February 2020, 59 cities earned the Tree City of the World recognition. Hyderabad, the only city in India, was placed alongside 119 other cities from 63 countries and has been recognized as a 'Tree City of the World' by the Arbor Day Foundation and the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The list includes countries that are growing and maintaining urban forests for creating healthy, resilient, and happy cities. Most of the cities featured in the list are from the United States with 38 cities, Canada with 15 cities, and the United Kingdom with 11 cities.

Dan Lambe, the President of Arbor Day Foundation, said that Hyderabad's commitment to effective urban forest management ensured a better future for its residents.

The Telangana state government has been implementing the Haritha Haram program since 2015, a large-scale tree-planting program to increase the tree coverage from 24% to 33%. The Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department (MA&UD) of Telangana had submitted to this recognition on Jan 31, 2021. The New Indian Express quoted the MA&UD stating that "this recognition was proof of its sustained and institutional efforts at its strategic planning and commitment to building a healthy city now and for the future."
