In a series of tweets, Trump said he has rejected Democrats' latest proposal for a more than $2 trillion relief bill because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "is not negotiating in good faith." But, hours later called on Congress to approve a bill providing another direct check to many Americans. "If I am sent a Stand Alone Bill for Stimulus Checks ($1,200), they will go out to our great people IMMEDIATELY. I am ready to sign right now," Trump tweeted. Trump also called on Congress to approve some additional assistance for airlines and a small-business aid program.
For months now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have been negotiating an agreement on another trillion-dollar-plus coronavirus relief deal. The House passed a $2.2 trillion bill last week, down from its earlier $3.5 trillion proposed package. Mnuchin had proposed a $1.6 trillion offer last week in response. The two sides remained at odds over how much state and local aid to include in an agreement, a source of disagreements for months, as well as other issues, reported the Wall Street Journal. Democrats have largely resisted passing piecemeal bills, pushing instead for an overall agreement.
