He was the first person to travel the world on a large-wheeled Ordinary, also known as a penny-farthing, between April 1884 to December 1886.

Fred A Birchmore was born in Athens, Georgia on November 29, 1911. After his studies, he traveled to Europe and bought a bicycle in Gotha, Germany in July 1935. He named his bike as Bucephalus and started his ride throughout Europe, Crete, Cyprus, Egypt, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and finally across the United States back to his home in Athens, Georgia. He covered 25,000 miles riding and remaining part of his journey by boat. He wore out 7 sets of tires.
