On March 18, 2021, Maharashtra recorded 25,833 fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day spike since the first infection was detected in the state in 2020, the All India Radio(AIR) reported. The state also observed 58 more fatalities, taking the death toll to 53, l138.

The count amounts to 65% of the total cases reported in India on March 18. Earlier, the highest single-day toll for Maharashtra was 24,886 cases recorded on September 11, 2020.

As of March 17, the state had recorded over 20,000 daily cases, 16 times since March 2020, The Hindustan Times reported. The 23,000 case threshold has been beaten six times. As of March 18, the count of total cases in Maharashtra was 2,396,340, with more than 166,000 active cases.

According to a central government team report, the state is now at the beginning of the second wave of COVID-19.
