Over 50 farmers have died during the protests, and many of them died either owing to the cold weather conditions or accidents and some died by suicideSince November 26, 2020, farmers in India have been protesting against three bills that were passed in the parliament in September 2020. The farmers have touted these bills as 'anti-farmer bills.' These bills: the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, were passed amid protests from the opposition and farmers, who argued that privatizing the agricultural sector would lead to exploitation.

At the time of writing, almost 50 farmers have died since the protests started. Many died due to cold weather conditions or road accidents and some died by suicide.

Till December 20, 2020, Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan, general secretary of a farmers union, said that they had paid tribute to 41 farmers who died in Punjab and Delhi since September 15, 2020. Of these, 30 were from Punjab's Malwa belt, six from the Doaba belt, two from the Majha belt, and three from Haryana. Although there is no exact list of people who died on the way to Delhi, it is stated that more than 26 died after November 26 on the way to Delhi or while coming back from the national capital, Indian Express reported.

So far, seven rounds of talks have taken place between the government and the farmer unions held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi; however, they were inconclusive. According to the Hindustan Times, the next round of talks will take place on January 15.
