The CDC said that only 6% of the 153,504 deaths in the U.S. were related to COVID-19.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided COVID-19 death statistics with incomplete data.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has provided COVID-19 death statistics with incomplete data. The CDC updated its provisional death counts for the reporting period February 1, 2020, through August 22, 2020. Following that, Twitter posts by some fringe accounts claimed that the CDC said that only 6% of the 153,504 U.S. deaths were related to COVID-19. The other 94% had, on average, two or more pre-existing conditions or causes of deaths. Nearly 60% of all deaths were over 75 years of age.

The CDC had clearly stated that deaths reported do not represent all deaths that occurred in that period because of lag in time between when the death occurred and when the death certificate is completed. It stated that deaths with confirmed or presumed COVID-19 were also shown. Hence it is not possible to verify the exact count of people who died directly due to COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. For reliable advice on COVID-19 including symptoms, prevention and available treatment, please refer to the World Health Organisation or your national healthcare authority.
