The new AT&T board chairman William Kennard has previously served at FCC under Bill Clinton and as an ambassador to the EU under Obama.

Kennard to serve as its chairman, effective January 2021. He succeeds Randall Stephenson, who retired from the board. He would be the first African American to be the chairman in its over 130-year-old history. Kennard joined the company's board in 2014 and currently serving on two committees.

Kennard served as FCC Chairman from November 1997 to January 2001. During his tenure, he shaped policies that created new wireless phones and brought in new broadband technologies.

He has also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the European Union in August 2009. He worked actively to promote transatlantic trade and investment and to eliminate regulatory barriers to commerce.
