India has contracted with Israel for 16,479 Negev Light Machine Guns and the delivery has started.

India has contracted with Israel for 16,479 Negev Light Machine Guns and the delivery has started. The army had been looking for Light Machine Guns best suited to Indian conditions as part of its modernization plans. The state-of-the-art Nevgev LMG which uses the 7.62X51 mm NATO rounds will replace the in-service INSAS LMGs. The approval was given by the Ministry of Defence under the fast track route and expected to provide much-required combat power.

The army's first consignment of 6000 guns was received in January this year amid the ongoing tension with China along the border. The LMG is manufactured by Israel Weapons Industries (IWI) and is a combat-proven weapon used by several countries around the globe.
