The data published by the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy confirms that unemployment rate has crossed 120 million in April.The CMIE report mentioned that the Indian unemployment rate touched 27.1 per cent in the week ended 3 May 2020. The survey estimated, employment fell by 114 million in April 2020 and on an average, it resulted in 122 million job losses due to lockdown measures taken to control coronavirus pandemic. It further said that unemployment was highest in urban areas. The Times of India quoted experts saying that informal sector workers have been severely affected due to shutdowns and layoffs.
The International Labour Organization had warned that about 400 million workers in the informal economy were at risk of falling deeper into poverty in India during the pandemic crisis and it is forcing many of them to return to rural areas.
