A study found multiple coronavirus mutations in a 36-year-old HIV-positive woman, who suffered prolonged but moderate COVID-19 symptoms.
The study revealed that after suffering from dyspnoea, the woman received oxygen in a general COVID-19 ward and was discharged home after nine days. On day 71, she complained of chest tightness, and her oxygen saturation dropped from 96% to 76%. After receiving treatment, most of her symptoms disappeared. However, she continued to test positive for another 4.5 months.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the novel virus went through 13 genetic mutations to its spike protein and another 19 mutations that changed the virus's behaviour. Additionally, it is stated that the woman's suppressed immune system led to the "patient's rapid accumulation of genetic changes."
