A study found multiple coronavirus mutations in a 36-year-old HIV-positive woman, who suffered prolonged but moderate COVID-19 symptoms. A non-peer-reviewed study conducted by the Africa Health Research Institute and the University of KwaZulu-Natal discovered dangerous coronavirus mutations in an HIV positive woman, who continued to test positive for 216 days.

The study revealed that after suffering from dyspnoea, the woman received oxygen in a general COVID-19 ward and was discharged home after nine days. On day 71, she complained of chest tightness, and her oxygen saturation dropped from 96% to 76%. After receiving treatment, most of her symptoms disappeared. However, she continued to test positive for another 4.5 months.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the novel virus went through 13 genetic mutations to its spike protein and another 19 mutations that changed the virus's behaviour. Additionally, it is stated that the woman's suppressed immune system led to the "patient's rapid accumulation of genetic changes."
