News by 7News and Daily Mail refutes the claim that Australian supermarkets have banned Chinese nationals due to COVID-19 fears.
However, upon research, it was found that the video was of an altercation between a couple and an old man over tins of a baby formula food in Lilydale, North-eastern Melbourne. Since there was a huge demand for the baby product, the store had put a limit of two tins of the baby formula per purchase. When the Chinese man picked up more tins exceeding the limit, an old man questioned him, which sparked the altercation. Later the Chinese couple was escorted out of the store by the staff there.
The video of this altercation has been wrongly shared on social media claiming that Australian supermarkets are denying entry for Chinese nationals in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. For reliable advice on COVID-19 including symptoms, prevention and available treatment, please refer to the World Health Organisation or your national healthcare authority.
