On Dec. 2, 2020, Twitter expanded its hate speech policy to include language that dehumanizes people based on race, ethnicity, and national origin.
Twitter further noted that the company would also continue to surface potentially violative content through proactive detection and automation. Under the hateful conduct policy, users are prohibited from promoting violence based on race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or severe disease. Furthermore, a Twitter spokesperson stated that the company had initially planned to add new categories to the policy over time after testing to make sure it can consistently enforce updated rules.
