The Supreme Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report on Vikas Dubey's encounter.

SC has asked the UP government to file a status report on Vikas Dubey, following which the court accused the government system of failure.

Vikas Dubey, an accused in 64 criminal cases, died in an encounter on July 10, 2020, when a police vehicle carrying him from Ujjain to Kanpur allegedly toppled over in an accident and he tried to escape from the spot after snatching the revolver of a police officer, the police had said.

The Supreme Court, on July 14, had asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file a status report on Vikas Dubey's case by July 16, 2020.

A bench headed by Chief Justice, SA Bobde had also questioned the bail of Vikas Dubey, who was out despite having criminal cases against him. He added that it was a failure of the whole system as all the previous decisions in the case were now at stake.
