Europe's share of energy from renewable sources in the gross final consumption of energy was 18% in 2018.Renewable energy sources often referred to as clean energy, are sources of energy that continuously replenished through natural processes. It includes wind power, solar power, hydropower, tidal power, geothermal energy, etc. The renewable energy data first became available in 2004, and the combined target for all the EU member states to collectively reach the mark in 2020 is 20%. While the share of renewable energy almost doubled between 2004 and 2018, the latest Eurostat figures showed that the European Union increased the share of renewables to 18% in 2018 from 17.5% in 2017. As many as 21 member states improved their figures. The positive development has been prompted by the legally binding targets for increasing the share of energy from renewable sources enacted by a directive.
