The U.S and the UK have criticised the arrest of political figures by Hong Kong on charges of organising and engaging in anti-government protests.
The United States Department of State issued a press statement by Secretary R. Pompeo on 18 April 2020, stating that the United States government will take action against the arrest of pro-democracy advocates in Hong Kong under the Sino British Joint Declaration which guaranteed that Hong Kong will continue to enjoy a high degree of autonomy.
The Foreign & Commonwealth Office issued a statement saying that they are concerned about the arrest of the political figures in Hong Kong and will closely monitor the case to see that the legal proceedings will be conducted fairly and transparently. They further went to say that under the Joint Declaration and the Basic Law, everybody has the right to protest peacefully and the authorities should avoid actions that inflame tensions.
