A publication on Chandrayaan 2 by ISRO and a briefing by NASA about the history of the moon on their respective official websites validate the claim. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in its Chandrayaan-2 page mentions that India will be the fourth country to soft-land on the lunar surface, a feat which was previously achieved by the USA, Russia and China. This means if India is successful in making a soft landing on the lunar south pole as scheduled, it will be the fourth country to do so.
A column published by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) also confirms that the US, Russia (previously known as the Soviet Union) and China were the only 3 countries to successfully soft-land on the surface of the moon.
