U.K. government data shows around 43 percent of plastic is recycled every year. But that includes the waste shipped to other countries as well. The U.K. ranks in the top five countries in the world for producing plastic waste. The country's recycling industry is finding it difficult to cope up with the increase in plastic waste. There are no adequate plastic recycling facilities to manage the waste. According to the latest figures published by the U.K. government, more than 45 percent of plastic waste material is recycled. But several reports by media pointed out that the menace has become worse amid the climate crisis.

A recent report by Greenpeace found that more than half of plastic waste is being been dumped in other countries, and the U.K. government counts the shipped plastic items as recycled. The British plastic waste has caused an explosion as it is not recycled correctly in those countries. Further, the National Audit Office (NAO) has raised concerns about the estimate of recycling rates provided by the government. It pointed to the error in the system and said the waste exported is not handled responsibly and could be ending up in landfill sites.
