U.K. government data shows around 43 percent of plastic is recycled every year. But that includes the waste shipped to other countries as well.
A recent report by Greenpeace found that more than half of plastic waste is being been dumped in other countries, and the U.K. government counts the shipped plastic items as recycled. The British plastic waste has caused an explosion as it is not recycled correctly in those countries. Further, the National Audit Office (NAO) has raised concerns about the estimate of recycling rates provided by the government. It pointed to the error in the system and said the waste exported is not handled responsibly and could be ending up in landfill sites.
