Twitter’s trending topics are ‘illegal.’

Trending topics on twitter are not illegal or unfair, they are determined by an algorithm and do not target an individual in particular.

Trending topics on twitter are not illegal or unfair, they are determined by an algorithm and do not target an individual in particular. On July 27, U.S President Donald Trump tweeted that Twitter's trending topics are usually targeted at him and are ridiculous, illegal, and unfair.

According to Twitter, trends are determined by an algorithm and, by default, are tailored according to users' following, interests, and location. This algorithm identifies topics that are popular now, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help users' discover the hottest emerging topics of discussion on Twitter. They are not manually chosen by people to target an individual in particular.
