Filmmaker Rakesh Roshan had been shot by the members of by Abu Salem's gang in 2000.On January 21, 2000, Rakesh Roshan was shot at by two unidentified assailants near his office on Tilak Road at Santacruz West in Bombay. The attackers fled the scene, and Roshan survived the attack.

In 2015, Jaan Usman, who was associated with jailed underworld don Abu Salem was arrested by the Mumbai police in another money extortion incident. According to the police, Usman was one of the assailants who had attacked Rakesh Roshan in 2000 and had also tried to extort money from other film personalities.
