Austin Steven was charged for sexually assaulting his 10-month old daughter Zara Scruggs. She died because of the trauma.
According to a press release from the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, on October 10, 2020, Lower Providence Police and Montgomery County Detectives processed the scene and obtained a search warrant to download Steven's phone. He had conducted multiple Google searches for an hour before calling 911. Detectives collected a diaper worn by the baby, which was soaked with blood.
Dr. Frederick Hellman, a forensic pathologist, conducted an autopsy on the infant. He determined that Zara Scruggs was the victim of a sexual assault, sustaining anal rectal trauma, and blunt force trauma to the head. The cause and manner of death were listed as pending while awaiting additional forensic test results.
Stevens was remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility after failing to make bail of $1 million. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m on October 13, 2020, before Judge Rebar.
