Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) won the 2011 and 2016 legislative assembly elections and 2017 by-elections in Vengara.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), in 2011, Kunhalikutty won the election securing 63,138 votes out of 99,530 total votes from the Vengara Constituency, defeating K.P. Ismayil of the Indian National League (INL), who had secured 24,901.
And in 2016, Kunhalikutty won again with 72,181 votes in the same constituency against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate P.P. Basheer with 34,124 votes.
P.K. Kunhalikutty, a sitting MLA, vacated the seat to contest in the bypoll in Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency in 2017. Hence, the Vengara constituency had to undergo by-elections. IUML candidate KNA Khader contested against Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate P.P. Basheer in the by-election. Khader emerged as the winner by garnering 23,310 votes, Indian Express reported.
The IUML has won all legislative assembly elections and by-elections held in the Vengara constituency since 2011.
