Sources have confirmed the death of three people in a terror attack in Nice.
The attacker was armed with knives and a copy of the Quran was also found at the scene. The police shot and detained the attacker who, according to a French anti-terrorism prosecutor, was born in Tunisia in 1999. The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, gave details of the attack on Twitter. He said that everything suggested what happened was a terror attack, calling the incident "islamofascism".
Tensions have grown recently after French President Emmanuel Macron defended people's right to free speech—including the right to publish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed. There were threats issued, and the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for a boycott of French products.
