COVID-19 can be spread by the use of air conditioners.

Centralised AC ventilators do spread COVID-19 respiratory droplets but the role of Window AC in large spaces doing the same has not been determined.

Centralised AC ventilators do spread COVID-19 respiratory droplets but the role of Window AC in large spaces doing the same has not been determined.Coronavirus can spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes as the droplets land on objects and surfaces around the person. Research article cited by CDC stated an incident in an air-conditioned restaurant in Guangzhou, China which involved three family clusters who were tested positive for coronavirus. The key factor for the infection was the direction of airflow where droplet transmission was prompted by air-conditioned ventilation. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 in large spaces it recommended strengthening temperature-monitoring surveillance and improved ventilation.

The PIB's Fact Check stated that uses of window AC is ok in homes but the risk was with the central air conditioning system. According to experts, the use of window ACs in small spaces does not pose any additional risk of coronavirus infection, especially at a time when people are isolated inside their homes with no outside contact.

But it has not been researched or clarified whether the Window AC is safe or unsafe to be used in large(commercial) area/spaces during the COVID-19 crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation. For reliable advice on COVID-19 including symptoms, prevention and available treatment, please refer to the World Health Organisation or your national healthcare authority.
