On September 14, 1920, Ebbie Tolbert became the first African American woman in St. Louis to register to vote.On September 14, 1920, Tolbert voted in Second Precinct, Seventh Ward of St.Louis at the age of 113, and added her name to the list as a registered voter. An interview of Tolbert's was published in St. Louis Star and Times. Tolbert said in the interview, "It is going to be a great honor to be permitted to vote," and [she] believes if women will vote right, they can do much to improve the present laws. "The world isn’t like it used be," said Tolbert, "and it may take the women to make things better. "
