The Supreme Court of India has refused to pass an order to ban liquor sales during the COVID-19 lockdown that has triggered large crowds across states, sparking fears of virus spread.

The record of proceedings by the SCI confirmed that it has refused to pass any judgement on public interest litigation(PIL) to ban liquor sales.

The record of proceedings by the SCI confirmed that it has refused to pass any judgement on public interest litigation(PIL) to ban liquor sales. On 8 May 2020, a three-judge bench, led by Justice Ashok Bhushan said that they would not pass any order on a petition filed under article 32 of the Constitution of India and dismissed the petition. The order said that states should consider an indirect sale or home delivery of liquor to maintain social distancing measures and standards concerning the COVID-19.

Similarly, the news articles reported that the petition was filed by Sai Deepak in the Supreme Court of India(SCI) seeking a ban on direct sales of liquors during the lockdown period due to large crowd seen at liquor shops which might initiate the spread of COVID-19 in India. But, the court refused to pass a direction to the government to shut liquor shops and suggested indirect sales could be a better alternative than the chaos which has followed the government's decision to open liquor shops during the lockdown.
