The Wuhan Institute Of Virology in China's Hubei province is one of the largest virology centers in Asia and has around 1500 virus strains. As the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the global community, China's Wuhan Institute Of Virology (WHIOV) became the center of controversies and conspiracy theories. Several conspiracy theorists believe that the virus was either bioengineered in the Wuhan lab or escaped the lab when scientists studied it. On the other hand, the Chinese government has categorically denied this claim.

The Wuhan Institute of virology is the largest virology institute in Asia, comprising of four research facilities. According to Livemint, the lab's website notes that the research facility preserves at least 1,500 virus strains. Furthermore, according to the WHIOV website, since the 1980s, the institute has made rapid progress in studying the insect virus, animal virus, virus classification preservation, among other things.

In 2018, China Daily, one of China's top media outlets, tweeted that the WHIOV is preserving around 1500 different virus strains. New Delhi-based author Brahma Chellaney also shared a screenshot of this tweet in early 2020. However, the tweet by China Daily was deleted, and it is no longer available. It is unclear as to why the tweet was deleted.
