BJP won only 64 seats in the 2016 Assembly election across 5 states.

During the assembly elections in 2021, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 64 seats across four states and a Union Territory.

During the assembly elections in 2021, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 64 seats across four states and a Union Territory. The assembly elections were held between April 4 and May 16 in 2016, for 822 constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Union Territory of Puducherry. BJP gained power only in Assam by winning 60 assembly seats. BJP won a seat in Kerala and ramped up its presence by winning three seats in the West Bengal assembly. The regional parties were the top performers in West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

However, in 2021, the party made significant gains in West Bengal by winning 76 seats. In Tamil Nadu, the party managed to win four seats and six seats in Puducherry. But they lost their only sitting seat from 2016 in Kerala to the CPI(M). BJP retained the 60 seat tally in Assam again in 2021 and formed a government. Thus the Bharatiya Janata Party's total tally in 2021 across four states and a Union Territory stood at 146, an increase of 82 seats compared to 2016.
