West Bengal government had introduced Kanyashree and Shikshashree scholarship to help girl child and backward community students in West Bengal. In 2013, the West Bengal Government and the Department of Women Development and Social Welfare had introduced a scheme for all teenage girls called Kanyashree Prakalpa. It aims to give education to them until the age of 18. It is a conditional cash transfer scheme to improve the status and well-being of girls in West Bengal.

The scheme has two sections- First- unmarried girls between the age of 13-18 years studying in VIII-XII in government-recognized schools would get an annual scholarship of Rs.500. Second -girls who have turned 18 years would benefit from a one-time grant of Rs.25,000 who has enrolled in open school/college or pursuing vocational/technical training or sports activity recognized by the government or an inmate of Home registered under J.J.Act 2000.

In 2014, the Shikshashree scheme was introduced by the Mamata Banerjee government to provide financial support to Scheduled Caste students studying in class V-VIII in any Government, Government aided, and all the government-recognized schools of West Bengal. The scheme provides an opportunity for the SC students to complete their Pre-matric stages and minimize school dropouts, especially for girl students. It had a significant role in preventing child marriage and lower dropout rates in the state, The Hindu reported.
