Chinese firms, ZTE and Huawei, were not included in the telecom gear makers list approved by India for conducting 5G trials. The Department of Telecommunications has permitted telecom service providers (TSP) to conduct trials for the use and applications of 5G technology in India. The technology partners were identified by TSPs themselves which include Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and C-DOT. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea had earlier applied to carry out 5G trials using China's Huawei technology. Later, they submitted a new application that did not include any Chinese entities.
The telcos will conduct trials in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas with experimental spectrum in various bands. Reliance will conduct the service trials using its indigenous technology. Though the Indian government has not officially banned the Chinese entities, they are now excluded from 5G service trials.
