The National Education Policy(NEP) 2020 cleared by the Union Cabinet has proposed changes in school and higher education.

The National Education Policy(NEP) 2020 cleared by the Union Cabinet has proposed changes in school and higher education.Ramesh Pokhriyal, the Union Minister for Human Resource Development, said that the National Education Policy 2020 would bring transformational reforms in school and higher education systems in the country. The NEP approved by the Union Cabinet replaces the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986. It is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems.

The 10+2 system will be upgraded by a new 5+3+3+4 curricular structure corresponding to ages 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years. The new policy aims to universalize education from pre-school to secondary level with 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio(GER) in school education by 2030. This system will bring the earliest open age group of 3-6 years under the school curriculum. The new system will have twelve years of schooling with three years of Anganwadi/ pre-schooling. Education up to grade five would be in mother tongue/ regional language. No language should be imposed on any student. Gross Enrolment Ratio will be raised to 50% by 2025 in higher education.
