Misra has stated that 16 tigers and 3 leopards have died in UP's Pilibhit district since 2012.A 6-year-old tigress was beaten to death by the villagers in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit district in July 2019. The incident took place under a protected zone of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. Concerning the incident, former field director G.C. Misra said that Pilibhit district and Tiger Reserve have seen deaths of as many as 16 tigers and 3 leopards within the jungle and its surroundings since 2012. Most of the deaths were caused by poisoning, trapping, affliction with contagious ailments like canine distemper, while only a few were due to infighting.
According to the tiger mortality data provided by the National Tiger Conservative Authority, Uttar Pradesh has recorded 35 deaths from 2012 to 2020.
