A total of 11,721 cases of Black fungus infection has been reported in India as of May 26, 2021. As the number of COVID-19 cases has soared in India, more than 11,000 cases of a rare infection called Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus, have been reported. The Health Ministry has directed the states to declare Black Fungus infections as an epidemic and report all issues.

Currently, 11,721 patients are undergoing treatment for Mucormycosis as per the data collected from different states. Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh have reported the highest number of cases, as per the latest government data.
