The amount of FDI inflow from China to India has been decreasing since FY2018. On January 4, 2020, an infographic was posted on the official Twitter of the Congress party, stating that Chinese FDI is on the rise under the Modi government in India. All the figures mentioned in the infographic circulating on social media are false and misrepresenting.

The increasing trend in China's Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) that was seen in 2017 and 2018 reversed in 2019 and 2020. The amount of FDI inflow from China to India in the fiscal year 2020 was estimated to be around 162 million U.S. dollars, a sharp decline from 229 million U.S. dollars in FY2019 and 350 million U.S. dollars in FY2018, according to Statista. It was 505 million U.S. dollars in FY2015, 461 million dollars in FY2016, and 198 million dollars in FY2017.

Finance Minister Anurag Singh Thakur, responding to a question in Lok Sabha on September 14, 2020, confirmed that during the 2019-20 financial year, China's FDI in India amounted to 163.77 million dollars only and that it had witnessed a sharp drop in the last three years.
