The study article published by NASA's Christina Khodadad and Gioia Massa in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science confirms the claim.According to the study, the lettuce grown in the Veggie units is safe to eat. The space-grown lettuce is free of disease-causing microbes and safe to eat and is at least as nutritious as the Earth-grown plants. Researchers compared the space veg to lettuce grown on Earth under similar environmental conditions to the International Space Station (ISS). By culturing the bacteria found on the lettuce and using DNA sequencing, they found that there were more microorganisms on the lettuce batches from the ISS than on those that were grown on Earth.
