The first known Indian restaurant in the U.S. was 'Ceylon India Inn,' established in New York City in the 1910s.According to information provided by the Asian American History in NYC by Baruch College and food studies scholar Krishnendu Ray of New York University, Ceylon India Inn was the first Indian restaurant established around 1914 at 8th Avenue & West 49th Street in New York City. The restaurateur was K. Yaman Kira, a retired dancer and circus performer from Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka). It was relocated to 148 West 49th Street by the mid-1920s. Soon there were several more such restaurants in the region. The Taj Mahal Hindu Restaurant was a notable addition to the Times Square dining scene in 1918, located at 243 West 42nd Street.
