During this time, several leaders disguised themselves to escape from arrest. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was among the banned groups, and several leaders and activists were jailed. Current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was a propagator (pracharak) during this period, and he disguised himself as a Sikh to avoid arrest. As per media reports, he even carried banned literature to Delhi and met Jan Sangh leaders in jail. Modi, then a 25-year-old, also posed as a Hindu religious mendicant (sanyasi) and took leaders such as George Fernandes to secure places.
