There are six oceans in the world.

There are four, and not six, ocean basins on the earth.

There are four, and not six, ocean basins on the earth. The U.S. National Ocean Service states that technically the planet has only one world ocean. The largest water bodies on the earth are oceans and saltwater bodies cover about 71 percent of the earth's surface. Earth has four ocean basins: the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Arctic.

Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are the major oceans, and the Arctic Ocean is smaller than the others. The Southern Ocean (also called the Antarctic Ocean) has been proposed as the fifth ocean by most countries, including the United States.
