On March 27, 2021, Bhutan started the COVID-19 vaccination drive after receiving a gift of 550,000 made-in India Covishield vaccine.January 20, 2021, India sent the first consignment of 1.5 lakh dosages of COVID-19 vaccine 'Covishield' to Thimphu, Bhutan. The second consignment of 400,000 Covishield vaccines arrived on March 22 at the Paro International Airport from India.

On arrival of the vaccines to Bhutan, the Venerable Dorji Lopen and Venerable Laytshog Lopen conducted the Thruesel and blessing Ceremony on March 22. At the event Lyonpo (Dr.) Tandi Dorji conveyed deep appreciation and gratitude towards Shri Narendra Modi and India's Government for the generous gift and for assisting Bhutan in managing the pandemic.

Bhutan launched the nationwide vaccination campaign on March 27, 2021, at Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School, Thimphu. On the first day of the national COVID-19 vaccination program, a total of 85949 people were vaccinated.

According to Buddhist astrology, Ninda Dema, a woman born in the Monkey year, was the first to receive the shot at a school-turned vaccination center.
