Umar Khalid has been charged under UAPA for giving speeches to evoke people for violence during the Delhi riots.Former JNU (Jawaharlal Nehru University) student leader Umar Khalid was arrested on September 13, 2020, under the UAPA act related to communal violence in northeast Delhi. The arrest was in connection to the Delhi riots in February 2020. The police said that both the Delhi government and the Ministry of Home Affairs had given the prosecution sanction against Khalid.

In one of his speeches, Khalid can be heard calling people to come on the streets during U.S.president Donald Trump's visit to India to show that India is going against the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and the country being divided on religion. Police have told the court that he is part of a big conspiracy and incited people to revolt against India's Government. They have linked his speeches to a larger conspiracy and charged for planning the riots that left 53 people dead and 400 injured.
