Many bodies of the coronavirus victims were left rotting on the streets of Ecuadorian cities and towns as morgues were already filled up.Reuters on 31 March 2020 stated that Ecuadorian authorities were struggling to collect the bodies of people who died due to coronavirus. The residents of Guayaquil complained that they were finding it difficult to dispose off their relatives' bodies who died due to coronavirus as they were left with the remains in their houses due to strict quarantine and curfew measures. Local media broadcasted images of long lines outside cemeteries in Guayaquil where people were seeking burial for their deceased relatives. Sebastian Barahona, one of the coordinators of the National Federation of Funeral Homes, said the city witnessed around five times more deaths in March.

El Comercio, a local newspaper quoted Peruvian journalist Herbert Holguín who claimed that people took coronavirus lightly and continued parties in the streets and that 70 percent of the city's population was infected with the coronavirus resulting in the corpses lying on the streets left abandoned by the authorities.

South China Morning Post too reported that in Guayaquil from last few days the dead bodies were wrapped in the plastic left in the city streets with almost all morgues filled up with bodies.
