Matt Gaetz defended his lone "no" vote against the human trafficking bill by saying he did not support creating a new federal agency.U.S. Republican Rep. from Florida's first congressional district, Matt Gaetz's vote against a human trafficking bill in 2017 has resurfaced on social media, as the Justice Department is investigating whether Gaetz violated human trafficking laws. It is alleged that Gaetz was sexually involved with a minor and paying for her travel in a car.

The Combating Human Trafficking in Commercial Vehicles bill was passed unanimously through the Senate in September 2017 before sailing through the House by 418 to 1. Gaetz was the only Republican member to vote against the bill.

Gaetz went on Facebook live to explain his decision. He said he believed the bill could lead to "mission creep" at the federal level beyond the Constitution's limits. He further stated that it's important to combat human trafficking, but he always votes 'no' on bills that establish more government entities. Gaetz said he feels that the bill would create more headaches than help.
