Delhi police accused of filing false charges over February 2020 riots.

Many charges filed by the Delhi Police during the CAA protests are alleged to be false and intentional, but these allegations have not been proved.

Many charges filed by the Delhi Police during the CAA protests are alleged to be false and intentional, but these allegations have not been proved.A series of protests erupted across India, including New Delhi, after the Central government passed into law the Citizenship Amendment Act in late 2019. In the violence that followed into 2020, many cases were filed, and the Delhi police made multiple arrests concerning the disorder. FIR's were registered against hundreds of people in many parts of Delhi.

It is alleged that the Delhi police had charged many falsified charges against innocent civilians and students, claiming that they took an active role in the communal violence. Accusations were also made against the Delhi Special Cell from various quarters, alleging that they were brutal towards students of the Jamia Milia Islamic University. The Delhi police had filed charges against political leaders for allegedly delivering hate speeches, which wad criticized by many as a move to incite more communal unrest in the Delhi NCR area.

The Supreme Court had taken cognizance of the allegations and criticized the Delhi police over their inaction and said that the violence could have been considerably contained if the police had taken appropriate action in time. The Delhi Police, however, defended their stance and explained that since most of the protesters were students, they had to hold back to avoid more backlash from the people. The Police department further claimed that they were a professional and disciplined force that prioritizes the lives and security of the people in their jurisdiction.

However, there are no official confirmations regarding the accusations made against the Delhi Police to be true.
